the online live music gig guide for birmingham & the midlands

Jo Hamilton

Came down from bonnie scotland in hired car to study viola
(and sing in secret) at thebirmingham conservatoire.
Studied a lot of viola and sang a bit.

Gave first public recital at hare and hounds
pub in 1999 – first review: ‘charming’.
First 3 track demo recorded 1999
at The Ranch in Bishops Wood just to
get the ball rolling.

Write on guitar + Logic Audio.

Influences/ inspiration: the horizontal rain
of the Highlands, sam brown’s vocals,
Joni Mitchell’s intricacies, Bjork’s fat curiosities, my friends, the
persistence of Andy Gunn, Bach’s huge repertoire,
travelling (the perfect excuse for
lyric writing and audio-sample collecting).
Jo has lived all over the world gaining musical influences and crafting her debut album, Gown, which is released in August 2009.
She has been compared to Annie Lennox, Feist, Regina Spektor and Tori Amos and a female Jeff Buckley, amongst others, though most people are noting how truly unique Jo is as a multi instrumentalist/ vocalist with one of the best albums out this year!
